Life for a horse pulling a cart or streetcar was rough, especially in the winter. At the stables where I ride, a horse is expected to live thirty years. A street horse in NYC in the late nineteenth century had a life-expectancy (or so I read) of eighteen months.
I had no idea it was that bad — really horrifying.
