O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found.

    • It doesn’t. You and I would disagree about this I’m sure, but I think the Anglican communion should be erased from the face of the earth forever solely for the crime of trying to “improve” language like this. It was a living part of our culture for millions of people well into the 60s — and then suddenly it wasn’t. As a cultural crime, I rank it with the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha sculptures by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
